Unity in Mission: From Jerusalem to the Ends of the Earth

Acts 1:8 – “but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”

Acts 2:42–47 – “42 They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and [a]to prayer.

43 [b]Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and [c]signs were taking place through the apostles. 44 And all those who had believed [d]were together and had all things in common; 45 and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. 46 Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread [e]from house to house, they were taking their [f]meals together with gladness and [g]sincerity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding [h]to their number day by day those who were being saved.

Big Idea: The church’s unity is not rooted in preference, politics or the culture of the world but in our shared mission.

“The church doesn’t unite around agendas—we unite around the living Christ.”

Sermon Points:

  1. Unity in Worship – Spirit-filled people gather around Jesus, not agendas.

And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together and they were bewildered, because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own [e]language. They were amazed and astonished, saying, “[f]Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we each hear them in our own [g]language [h]to which we were bornParthians, Medes, and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia, Pontus and [i]Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya around Cyrene, and [j]visitors from Rome, both Jews and [k]proselytes11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own [l]tongues of the mighty deeds of God.”

Acts 2:42 – “And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.”

  1. Unity in Witness – Spirit-filled people point to Jesus, not themselves

Acts 1:8 – “You will be my witnesses…”

Acts 2:47 – “…praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”

  1. Unity in Work – Spirit-filled people give to build others, not themselves

Acts 1:8c – “…and you will be my witnesses…to the ends of the earth.”

Acts 2:44–45 – “And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.”
